How to adopt a UniFi U7 Pro access point

Published onby Iron

Getting your UniFi U7 Pro up and running starts with adoption (proces of connecting it to your UniFi Controller). Whether you're setting it up for the first time or re-adopting after a reset, this guide walks you through every step.

Let's dive in!

🚨 Before we dive in, please don't self-host your UniFi Controller if you take care of client networks. Sooner or later this will cause issues! It's fine for home users, but definitely not recommended for IT service businesses and MSPs. If you want secure, reliable and a scalable hosting solution check out UniHosted.

What adoption means

“Adoption” is UniFi’s term for registering a new device to your controller.

Once adopted:

  • The AP is provisioned with your wireless settings.
  • It becomes visible in the Devices panel.
  • You can update firmware and manage configurations remotely.

Step 1: Connect the U7 Pro to your network

Plug the U7 Pro into a PoE port on your UniFi switch, PoE injector, or PoE-enabled router.

Make sure:

  • The LED turns solid white, indicating it’s powered and ready.
  • The device is on the same network/subnet as your UniFi Console or controller.

đź’ˇ If you're not using a UniFi gateway, be sure your network allows local discovery traffic (UDP port 10001).

Step 2: Open your UniFi Network controller

Use either the web version or mobile app:

Sign in using your UI account, or local credentials if remote access is not enabled.

Step 3: Look for pending devices

Navigate to:

UniFi Devices > U7 Pro (Pending Adoption)

You’ll see your U7 Pro listed with a “Pending Adoption” status. Click it.

Then select:

Adopt

The controller will begin provisioning the AP. This may take a minute.

Step 4: Wait for provisioning to finish

You’ll know adoption is complete when:

  • The device status changes to Connected
  • The LED turns solid blue
  • The AP appears under Devices in the UniFi dashboard

At this point, your wireless networks will be pushed to the U7 Pro, and it will begin broadcasting your SSIDs.

Having trouble? Try this.

  • Power cycle the AP.
  • Factory reset the device (hold the reset button for 10 seconds).
  • Update your controller to the latest version.
  • Open TCP port 8080 and UDP port 10001 on your firewall if you’re self-hosting.
